Puli és Juhász
Sometimes gastronomy doesn’t need to start a revolution — it just needs to be good. Simple, warm, and honest. That’s exactly what Puli és Juhász, a modern Hungarian csárda tucked into Dob Street in downtown Budapest, sets out to deliver. We were already impressed by our summer visit, but we returned during the festive season to see how their menu performs when hospitality matters the most.
The Newest Member of the Beloved VakVarjú Restaurant Family
Many still don’t realize that Puli és Juhász is a new venture by Semsei Gastronomy, part of the beloved VakVarjú restaurant family, which opened its doors in the summer of 2025. Their goal? To revive classic Hungarian flavors in an urban setting — nostalgic without being outdated. The arched brick ceilings, embroidered accents, spice garlands, and traditional Hungarian folk music create a warm, immersive atmosphere that feels both authentic and inviting.
Their motto says it best: “The puli’s loyalty keeps things in order, the shepherd’s calm guards the soul, and the csárda fills both the stomach and the heart with joy and love.” And honestly? That’s pretty much what happens here.
Holiday Dishes Worth Gathering For
Turkey Breast Stuffed with Camembert and Prunes, in Almond Crust with Creamy Mashed Potatoes
This might sound like a rich and overly festive plate, but the Puli és Juhász kitchen strikes a beautiful balance. The almond crust was perfectly crisp, the turkey juicy and tender, while the camembert added a lush creaminess that worked surprisingly well with the subtle sweetness of the prunes. The mashed potatoes were smooth, buttery, and comforting — not haute cuisine, but exactly what a csárda should serve. Bonus: the presentation was clean, elegant, and Instagram-ready.

Wild Boar Tenderloin with Forest Mushroom Ragout and Potato Croquettes
This dish was a highlight. The wild boar was perfectly seared on the outside, pink and tender on the inside, and seasoned with precision. The accompanying ragout, rich with porcini and other wild mushrooms, brought deep, earthy tones that paired beautifully with the meat. The potato croquettes were golden and crispy, though if we’re being picky, homemade croquettes would elevate the experience even more — a small detail in an otherwise standout plate.

Mulled Wine Done Right
It’s not easy to nail mulled wine — but here, they absolutely did. Warm, aromatic, and gently spiced, it came with a fresh slice of orange and just the right balance of sweetness and depth. The perfect winter drink to accompany a hearty Hungarian dinner.

Dessert Highlights: No Debate Here
Aranygaluska with Vanilla Custard
This one hit home. The aranygaluska — fluffy, sweet, and generously filled with walnuts — came drenched in a velvety vanilla custard that we may or may not have eaten with a spoon once the galuska was gone. A true Hungarian classic, not just for show but made with genuine care and skill.

Dobay’s Holiday Pastry Selection
This special dessert platter deserves a mention of its own. It featured homemade zserbó and mézes krémes (honey-cream layered cake), paired with a spoonful of house-made apricot jam that had just the right rustic texture and natural flavor. Like visiting a Christmas fair — only this time, served on porcelain and enjoyed in a cozy seat.

Service and Vibe: Warm, Attentive, and Professional
We’ve read a few reviews about service inconsistency, but our visit was seamless. The staff was attentive and polite throughout — not only when taking the order but also checking in with care during the meal. Friendly, helpful, and genuinely invested in the guest experience.
Final Thoughts: A Place Worth Coming Back To
Puli és Juhász proves that Hungarian cuisine doesn’t need reinvention — it just needs to be done well. The menu is a roll call of beloved classics, and while none of it is meant to shock or surprise, the execution, presentation, and setting lift everything above the everyday. This isn’t fine dining, nor is it street food. It’s something in between — a modern csárda in the middle of the city, accessible to everyone, yet delivering a warm, memorable culinary experience. A slice of tradition — served with pride, in the heart of Budapest.
